OUR BEGINNING

The Foundationalist was founded in 2018 at Bowdoin College by Aleksia Silverman and Sydney To. Their goal: to create a unique literary journal where undergraduate authors could exercise full artistic license, unrestricted by traditional page limits, word counts, genre restrictions, etc.

From there, the journal grew quickly. To support the diverse perspectives of students studying anywhere from New England to South Africa to Singapore, The Foundationalist added two new branches of editorial staff, one each at the University of Iowa and Yale University. Since then, we’ve been joined by a fantastic group at Saint Mary’s College of California. Each board offers their own expertise and experiences, while all working towards the same goal: “To showcase works that accurately represent the diversity of thought and innovation of undergraduates around the world.” Over 150 contributors have joined this community!

By incorporating a standardized submission process, hands-on developmental and editing work, and precise record-keeping, we work to equip all of our board members with pre-professional skills applicable in numerous career fields outside of the literary industry.
